How to Keep Your Extensions Looking Beautiful Longer

Like anything else, hair extensions have to be cared for, especially when they're in human hair extensions.

Here are 15 tips to help you keep your extensions looking beautiful for as long as possible:

Gently brush the extensions before you wash them to make sure there are no tangles.

If you're the type of person who washes her hair everyday, understand that you don't have to wash your human hair extensions daily. In fact you shouldn't, because you'll be stripping the hair of its natural oils and it'll look scrappy very quickly.

Wash your extensions with a small amount of gentle shampoo, but only after a few days' wear. (NOT baby shampoo, which isn't actually gentle at all.) Make sure to rinse them well so you don't leave a residue of shampoo on the extensions.

Don't use really hot water for washing or rinsing. (The packaging for your extensions may advise what water temperature to use.)

Use a small amount of good conditioner, and again, make sure to rinse well afterwards.

Give your human hair extensions a good deep-conditioning treatment from time to time, just as you would your own hair. If you wear and therefore also wash them more often, make sure to give them a treatment more often, too. Once a week would be great.

Comb them through GENTLY with a wide-tooth comb. (Hair is weaker and more prone to breaking when it's wet).

Let them air dry.

You can use a hot iron or a blow dryer to style your clip in human hair extensions, but NOT on a high heat. (Please Note: If you have synthetic extensions, using either with strong heat will melt them!)

Apply a good heat-protecting spray to your extensions before you use hot styling tools on them.

Brush and comb your clip in human hair extensions carefully - no tugging! Use your fingers and your patience if you come across a small knot.

To be even more specific, use a wide paddle brush. This type of flat, wood brush has wide rows of wood bristles with ball tips. It helps to eliminate static when your extensions (and your own hair) are dry. And it's the best kind of brush to use for untangling long wet hair.

If you want to sleep wearing your hair extensions, you need to protect them from tangling so they don't look old before their time. Either make a slack braid, or a pony tail that isn't tight. This is important; your extensions dislike stress as much as you do!

Never use a rubber band to secure the braid or pony tail. Easy to put on, but difficult to remove, rubber bands will break hair, whether it's yours or on an extension.

Extension hair also gets split ends over time, so trim the tips as needed to remove the split ends. If you don't have proper haircutting scissors and a steady hand, take them to a pro for the trimming.
